  • The story behind the art:

The Bhil are the second largest tribe in India inhabiting the states of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Legend has it that the famed archer from the epic Mahabharata, Eklavya, was a Bhil. Some scholars also claim that Valmiki, the author of the epic Ramayana, was a Bhil. In days of old, highly ornate Bhil paintings used to adorn the walls of their mud huts. With time, these artisans started doing these paintings on canvas and handmade paper. The brilliant colours, the use of intricate dots to create patterns that manifest in animal, forest, bird and human forms, including ancestors, and the Bhil gods are typical of Bhil art. A Bhil painting on your wall will connect you to the rich heritage and craftsmanship that is so incredible of India. It could also be one of the most thoughtful gifts for someone who matters, to be cherished for a lifetime.
