The story behind the art:
Kerala mural paintings trace their origins back to the 8th century AD. They portray vivid images of chracters and episodes from mythology, preserving traditions, and forming a bridge with the past. The scriptual basis of this art form can be found in the Chithrasoothram, a book written about 1500 years back in Sanskrit. This book has about 287 short verses and is probably one of the most detailed books on painting that exist today. There are five colours (panchavarna) that dominate Kerala mural paintings. They are yellow, green, red, black and white, and represent the "gunas" or qualities of human nature, i.e., sattvik (harmony or balance), rajasik (passion or desire) and tamasik (dark or resistant). Initially done on temple walls, the paintings are now done on canvas and hence can be made available to connoisseurs worldwide.
