The story behind the art:
Extremely durable, marble renders itself to various kinds of artistry, including carving, and inlay and onlay work. Found extensively in Greek architecture, marble found strong patronage in India under the Mughals. The art reached its pinnacle in the spectacular Taj Mahal that emperor Shah Jahan constructed in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The carvings, the delicate inlay work on marble with semi precious stones and the splendour of the monument has stood the test of time and continues to amaze people from all walks of life to this day. The availability of exceptional quality marble in the Makrana region of Rajasthan helped sustain the practice around the region. Today, local artisans around Agra and many parts of Rajasthan carry forth their heritage with a mix of old-world, and modern creations by chiselling them into beautiful forms and using semi-precious stones like lapis lazuli, turquoise, carnelian, mother of pearl, jade, etc for delicate inlay work on the stone.
