  • The story behind the art:

The history of Kashmiri carpets go back to the 15th century. It is believed that Sultan Zain-Ul-Abedin brought with him skilled Persian and central asian carpet weavers to the Kashmir valley to train local artisans. What sets these carpets apart and makes them unique is a specialized way of weaving called "Taleem", which is essentially a set of written codes and symbols for design patterns and colours. It is a colour coded chart that the carpet weavers follow to guide them about the number of knots to be woven to render the respective shades. Due to their incredible beauty, they received royal patronage over the centuries and to this day their outstanding quality makes Kashmiri hand woven silk carpets amongst the best in the world.
